Rockman X
The Rockman X series is the second in the franchise, and debuted December 17th, 1993 on the Super Famicom/Super NES. Rockman X is one of the spinoffs of the now long-running video game series, and is currently available in the anthology collection Rockman X Collection, along with five of its sequels and Rockman Battle & Chase.
Rockman X was possibly created when the original Rockman was still around (there has yet to be proof one way or the other regarding this), but due to instabilities in his programming, Dr. Light had him sealed away in a diagnostic capsule for 30 years of testing to make sure he wouldn't turn against mankind. This testing is quite possibly what prevents X from becoming an Irregular. Dr. Cain was the man who found X almost 100 years after his creation and then X's life as an Irregular Hunter began.
Zero is X's partner as an Irregular Hunter, and generally seen as being much more up close and personal in his encounters. His original weapon was a standard Buster, but he is later equipped with the Z-Saber in Rockman X2, allowing for close-range combat, which seems to be preference for him. Zero was created by Dr. Wily, possibly to destroy the original Rockman and Wily's own renegade creation, Forte, but was woken up many years later unable to remember his original programming.
Another addition to X's cadre, Axl first appeared in Rockman X7. Originally a member of the Red Alert Syndicate, he defects to the Hunters at the beginning of the game. His weapons are dual laser pistols, and he heavily prefers distanced combat due to this--a stark opposite of Zero. He also has the ability to transform into certain Reploids of identical size by destroying them with a special laser shot, otherwise he gains an ability from destroyed Reploids, as per normal.
